The Centre for Modelling and Simulation (CFMS) has an exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist looking to further develop their career in a fast-moving digital engineering environment. CFMS is an independent digital engineering consultancy providing technical expertise to help organisations create better solutions by pioneering new approaches to product development. The Company provides a managed research environment for its customers to drive synergies from in-house HPC facilities and expertise in Modelling and Simulation allowing companies and organisations to experiment in a risk-free manner with new design solutions. About the role:
The Data Scientist’s role will be to support and develop the Company’s Digital Engineering and Manufacturing initiatives, embedding data science and AI technologies into this activity to drive improvements in productivity and the concept of data driven design. The incumbent will support the Domain Expert in the development, maintenance and continued operation of the Company’s AI capabilities, liaising with clients, prospective clients and suppliers.
The role will contribute to:
- the development of research propositions to meet the needs of our clients
- the delivery of commercial and R&D projects to time, cost and quality
- supporting the development & improvement of the data science internal platforms, enabling the collection, processing, analysis and visualisation of large-scale multi-source data sets
- the design and development of methodologies and software to clean and analyse big data, collected from heterogeneous and multiple sources, and build models to derive industrial insight
- present results in a clear, understandable and innovative way in order to provide help for decision making
The Data Scientist would be exposed to a wide variety of exciting and leading-edge technologies and systems across a range of industrial sectors and must be comfortable researching new methods and working without direct supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
The Data Scientist will have an opportunity to work on a wide variety of internal systems, including High Performance Computing, virtualisation and private cloud. This will involve:
- Supporting the development of MLOps capability
- Maintaining awareness of new and emerging Data Science technologies
- Developing and implementing Data Science solutions for CFMS use
- Providing support/advice to the wider technical team
- Supporting visits to CFMS by clients, prospective clients and suppliers
Key Relationships:
The Data Scientist will be embedded within the main CFMS technical team to support the development and deployment of artificial intelligence technologies with key partners and clients. This will involve a close working relationship with all other CFMS teams; Model Based Engineering, Engineering Computing Services and Advanced Simulation and may involve working offsite from time to time.
Experience:
- Masters Degree in Data Science, Computer Science or related field
- Minimum 1-year experience in developing machine learning and/or deep learning models for industrial application
Skills, Knowledge and Competencies:
Machine Learning
- Application of various Machine Learning techniques (Classification, Regression) in a production application using scikit-learn, numpy, pandas, Jupyter notebooks etc.
Deep Learning
- Application of various Deep Learning techniques (NN, CNN, RNN, LSTM etc) on text, time series, audio and imagery data using TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras etc.
Software Programming
- Basic working experience/knowledge in Unix/Linux environment
- Basic knowledge of containerised applications, for example Docker
- Basic knowledge of GPU based highly parallel software development
- Proficient in programming languages like Python
- Writing and testing production code: use of source control (GitHub) and continuous testing/integration
Visualisation
- Experience in using data visualization libraries like Plotly, Seaborn, GGPlot etc.
Mathematics
- Ability to implement mathematical concepts from published scientific documents
Domain Knowledge
- Knowledge of high value engineering & manufacturing business processes
- Knowledge of robotic systems / automation
Others

Reporting to: Domain Expert - Data Science
Annual Salary: Subject to applicant experience and skills
